Haitian-Canadian artist Manuel Mathieu is presenting “Ayizan,” his first solo exhibition in France, at Galerie Poggi in Paris, Le Nouvelliste reported on Tuesday, November 3. Because of its success, the show has been extended and is open to the public until December 23, 2026.
The paper describes the exhibition as a new step in the artist's international career. Born in Port-au-Prince in 1986, Mathieu moved to Montreal at 19. He works in painting, drawing, ceramics and installation, and his work often draws on his Haitian upbringing, historical violence and spiritual legacy, according to his London gallery, Pilar Corrias.
In Haitian Vodou, Ayizan is a lwa, or spirit, associated with initiation and the marketplace, a figure that gives the exhibition a title rooted in Haitian spiritual culture.
