Jacmel's municipal commission carried out a large cleanup campaign from October 23 to 25, including the removal of abandoned and broken-down vehicles, under the supervision of deputy mayors Stéphanie Edward Lafontant and Julie Leclerc, iciHaiti reported.

Crews worked at several strategic sites, including Saint-Michel Hospital, Lakou Nouyòk and the city slaughterhouse. The town hall said the goal is to keep the city clean, protect public health and help prevent infectious diseases.

The campaign comes as Jacmel is on high alert because of the threat of anthrax, according to iciHaiti.

The municipality is also making the renovation of its slaughterhouse, idle for more than nine years, a major priority. Once it reopens, the town hall, the Southeast agriculture directorate and the Health Ministry (MSPP) want to tighten sanitary checks on meat sold and eaten in the commune.
