The African-led resolution favors equal-area projections over the 16th-century Mercator map.
UN member states voted 164 to 1, with six abstentions, to endorse map projections that more accurately show the true size of continents, the result of an African-led campaign against the Mercator projection. The United States cast the only vote against.
The resolution does not require anyone to abandon Mercator, but it gives the UN's backing to equal-area maps. On such maps Africa appears about 14 times larger than Greenland, and the Caribbean appears at its true scale.
