U.S. forces carried out what officials called “limited defensive strikes” on Monday night, November 2, against Qeshm Island in southern Iran, near the Strait of Hormuz, CBS News reported. A senior military official said the strikes responded to Iran's Revolutionary Guards firing on a U.S. aircraft.
In a Fox News interview on Tuesday, President Donald Trump confirmed the strikes, saying Iran had spent about two months building an air defense installation and that the United States hit it as soon as it was finished, Le Nouvelliste reported.
Iran's deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, said his country “retains the right to legitimate self-defense.” The Revolutionary Guards said Iran's leadership would decide the timing and conditions of a response, without announcing any retaliation.
Diplomacy continues. Qatar's foreign ministry said both sides remain committed to negotiations and that Doha is working toward an interim deal, and Reuters reported that mediators expected feedback within 36 hours. Senior Iranian official Mohsen Rezaei called the U.S. response to Iran's latest proposal “not convincing,” while the AP reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is pressing Trump to resume strikes after the midterms.
The strikes came on the eve of the U.S. midterm elections. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called the war a “big, big drag” on Republicans, citing gas prices, CNBC reported.
