The battle of Vertières on Nov. 18, 1803, just outside the city, sealed independence.
Cap-Haïtien, once Cap-Français, was the richest colonial city in the Caribbean. On November 18, 1803, Haitian forces under Dessalines and François Capois defeated Napoleon's army at Vertières, just outside the city.
Today its gingerbread houses, harbor and proximity to the Citadelle make it a centerpiece of Haitian heritage.
