Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has pushed the first round of the presidential and legislative elections back to July 18, 2027, according to a revised electoral calendar dated Wednesday, October 28, reported by Le Nouvelliste and HaitiLibre. The vote had been set for December 13, 2026.
Under the new calendar, the second round of the presidential and legislative races, together with local elections, is scheduled for October 4, 2027, and the names of all newly elected officials would be known by October 23, 2027, Le Nouvelliste reported. The council also plans to keep updating its voter registration system from October 19, 2026 to September 28, 2027.
The CEP said the update follows the electoral decree of October 6 and consultations with security forces, political parties, civil society, the private sector and the government. Al Jazeera reported that the council extended candidate registration deadlines and introduced online voter registration, and that insecurity has made registration centers hard to reach.
Fewer than 900,000 people had registered to vote by Wednesday, the Miami Herald reported, according to Al Jazeera, out of about 6.5 million Haitians who hold the identity card needed to enroll. Vant Bèf Info, which obtained the document, noted that some durations and deadlines in it appear inconsistent. Haiti has not held an election since 2016.
