Haitian konpa has become one of East Africa's biggest musical influences. "Finale," a collaboration between Kenya's Bien and Tanzania's Ali Kiba released in March, became one of the region's biggest songs of the year.
Konpa grooves spread through Nairobi's social dance scene from around 2022 before crossing into Afro-fusion and Bongo Flava. Born in Haiti in the 1950s, when Nemours Jean-Baptiste set its tempo, konpa is built on mid-tempo grooves, syncopated guitars and bright keyboards.
