U.S. stocks surged on Wednesday, November 4, the day after Democrats won both chambers of Congress. By mid-afternoon the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up about 1,511 points, or 2.9%, back above 53,000 for the first time since September 8 and on pace for its best day since April 2025, CNBC reported. The S&P 500 rose 1.8% and the Nasdaq 1.9%.
Oil prices fell sharply. U.S. crude and Brent futures both dropped more than 8%, and Brent fell below $100 a barrel, Le Nouvelliste reported. Vice President JD Vance blamed the war with Iran for Republican losses, and analysts told CNBC the result adds pressure to end it.
Investors said the vote removed political uncertainty and pointed to divided government, which has historically been good for markets; Trump's acceptance of the results added to the rally. Economy-linked stocks led the gains, while some AI-linked stocks such as CoreWeave fell on worries about possible limits on data centers. Le Nouvelliste reported that Tesla and SpaceX shares also fell.
Lower oil prices matter far beyond Wall Street. In Haiti, where fuel is imported, the central bank has said that rising fuel prices pushed up the cost of daily goods this year.
