August 2026 was the joint hottest month on record globally, level with July 2023, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service. The global average surface air temperature was 16.96°C, 1.65°C above the pre-industrial average.
Scientists attribute the heat to greenhouse gas emissions combined with strong El Niño conditions in the Pacific. Sea surface temperatures outside the polar regions averaged a record 21.07°C for August, and Western Europe had its warmest summer on record.
