Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz won Florida's 20th Congressional District on Tuesday, November 3, defeating Republican Brent Andersen, The Haitian Times reported, citing the Associated Press, which called the race at 7:09 p.m. Eastern time.

The seat was last held by Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, the first Haitian American elected to Congress from Florida. According to The Haitian Times, she resigned in April amid federal corruption charges and a congressional ethics investigation; she has pleaded not guilty.

Wasserman Schultz, a former chair of the Democratic National Committee, switched districts to run and now heads to a 12th term. The AP describes her as the first Jewish congresswoman elected from Florida. Andersen, who founded a commercial and property insurance company, had campaigned on lowering insurance costs, a growing worry in the state.

Florida is home to an estimated 569,000 people of Haitian origin, the largest Haitian population of any state, according to 2024 Census Bureau figures cited by The Haitian Times. The district has a large Black and Caribbean population, and the paper noted that Haitian American voters will be watching how their new representative takes up their priorities.
