Democrat Kathy Hochul won reelection as governor of New York on Tuesday, November 3, defeating Republican Bruce Blakeman, the Nassau County executive, The Haitian Times reported. The Associated Press called the race at 9 p.m. Eastern time.

Hochul became governor in 2021 when Andrew Cuomo resigned while she was lieutenant governor, and won her first full term the following year. This was her second time being elected. The only scheduled debate between the two candidates took place on October 13.

New York has about 185,000 residents of Haitian ancestry, the second-largest Haitian population of any state, concentrated in Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island and Rockland County, according to American Community Survey estimates cited by the paper.

Haitian immigrants in the state face continued uncertainty after the federal government ended Temporary Protected Status for Haiti in August. Hochul opposed that decision: in an August 17 letter to the Department of Homeland Security, she warned it would threaten livelihoods and force employers to let go of workers who lost their work permits.
