Health Minister Dr. Bertrand Sinal has made what iciHaiti called an unprecedented visit to the Cayemites Islands, off the coast of Grand'Anse. The trip is part of plans to restart and finish the Anse-à-Maçon health center.

He was accompanied by Dr. Jean Mary Casimir, the departmental health director for Grand'Anse, and Jean Loubert Galety, the department's health administrator. Officials say the finished center will give islanders better access to basic care and should sharply reduce deaths of women in childbirth, a long-standing problem on islands that lack medical services and proper facilities.

Sinal said he hoped the work would stay on schedule so that he could return in December to open the center.

The push to restart construction began with a former departmental director, Dr. Boutroce Gally Pierre, after a visit in March 2025. That visit followed the death of a pregnant woman who could not get care on the island and could not reach Pestel or Corail because of bad weather.
