American Airlines plans to return to Haiti next month after a two-year absence. Starting November 1, the airline is scheduled to fly every day between Miami and Cap-Haïtien on Boeing 737 aircraft, the news site HaitiLibre reported.

American suspended its Haiti flights in November 2024, when the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration barred American carriers from serving the country after Spirit and JetBlue planes were hit by gunfire at the Port-au-Prince airport.

The new flights use Cap-Haïtien, in the North, which has become Haiti's main international gateway while the capital's airport remains off limits to U.S. airlines. Sunrise Airways and other carriers already connect the city to Miami, the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Bahamas.

For the diaspora, a daily flight by a major U.S. airline means more seats and easier connections through Miami for the holidays. Travelers heading to Port-au-Prince still face a long and risky road trip or a domestic flight from Cap-Haïtien.

The U.S. State Department keeps Haiti at Level 4, “Do Not Travel.” Check with the airline before you book, because schedules can change.
