Israelis vote on Tuesday, October 27, in an election that will test whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu can hold on to power, CBS News reported. Polls show a very close race, and most give neither camp a decisive majority in the 120-seat Knesset.

Netanyahu's Likud hopes to form a coalition with ultranationalist and religious parties, and President Donald Trump has endorsed him. His main rival is former military chief Gadi Eisenkot of the Yashar party, front-runner of a “change bloc” of Arab, left, right and centrist parties united against Netanyahu.

The vote comes nearly eight months into a joint U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. Netanyahu argues that only he can work with Trump to stop Iran's nuclear program, while Eisenkot promises a state inquiry into the failure to prevent the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack.

Analysts quoted by CBS expect an indecisive result. Forming a government could take days or weeks, and a deadlock could lead to talks across camps, a minority government or new elections. Israel held five elections between 2019 and 2022.
