President Donald Trump said on Wednesday, November 4, that it was “largely true” that the war with Iran contributed to his Republican Party's defeat in the midterm elections, after Vice President JD Vance made the same argument, Le Nouvelliste reported.

Vance had called on Republicans to be honest about the political cost of an unpopular conflict. Speaking to reporters at the construction site of the future White House ballroom, Trump said the war had pushed gasoline prices up “a bit in the short term.”

He added that he would do the same thing again, saying the war is the only long-term way to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate on Tuesday, and oil prices fell sharply on Wednesday as markets bet on pressure to end the conflict.
