The Tanp Asòtò temple of Léogâne held its traditional Gede dance on Sunday, November 1, in Dampus, in the Monp'tit Village area, Le National reported.
The celebration came in two parts. The first, which began around 11 a.m., was entirely spiritual and centered on offering animals to the spirits. Hounsi kanzo and oungan wore white tunics to honor the dead.
In the evening, the ceremony was combined with rara music, with the festivities starting around 11:30 p.m. The rara band Malice Cachée de Cassagne provided the music.
The Gede are the spirits of death and cemeteries, honored in early November around All Saints' Day and the Day of the Dead. This year, insecurity kept many people away from some cemeteries in the Port-au-Prince area, according to Le National.
