Haitian public- and private-sector unions say they will hold two days of union and popular mobilization on December 1 and 2 unless the government of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé responds to their demands by November 30, according to a statement published by Rezo Nòdwès on November 4. A national day of action first set for October 30 was postponed because of bad weather.
Fifteen unions signed the statement, including the police union SPNH-17, the education union UNNOH, transport unions and the CUTRASEPH confederation. They demand the withdrawal of a notice announcing a 15% tax on workers, the restoration of the 14th-month salary for civil servants in all ten departments, and payment of the government's debts to hospitals and to OFATMA health providers, so that insured patients can get proper care.
The unions also want concrete measures on the cost of living, salary adjustments, roads cleared, the reopening of the airport at Maïs Gâté and the return of displaced people to their homes, so that members of the diaspora can travel home for January 1, 2027. “We will not enter 2027 in a climate of insecurity,” the statement says. The unions say the rest of their December calendar will be announced later.
