Democratic Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts, who introduced a bill to restore Temporary Protected Status for Haitians, won reelection on Tuesday, November 3, defeating Republican John Deaton, a lawyer and former Marine, the Associated Press reported in an article published by The Haitian Times.
Markey introduced Senate Bill 4814 in June 2026. It would require the federal government to designate Haiti for Temporary Protected Status through April 20, 2029, allowing eligible Haitians to remain and work legally in the United States. The bill is pending in the Senate Judiciary Committee. An effort by Markey and other Democrats to pass a House-approved Haiti TPS bill was blocked in July.
Markey, a senator since 2013, beat Representative Seth Moulton in the Democratic primary. His win comes as Democrats took control of the Senate in the midterms, according to CNBC.
