Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, who was backed by President Donald Trump, in the Ohio governor's race on Tuesday, November 3. She becomes the first woman elected governor of Ohio and the first Democrat to win the office in 20 years, the Associated Press reported in an article published by The Haitian Times.

Acton, 60, is a public health physician who led the state health department in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic under Republican Governor Mike DeWine. She had never held elected office and campaigned on affordability and access to health care. “The healing begins today,” she said in her victory speech, pledging to lower the temperature of Ohio politics.

Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur and 2024 presidential candidate, was supported on the trail by Trump and Vice President JD Vance. His campaign pulled a late attack ad featuring Acton's estranged mother after criticism from both parties. In Ohio's Senate race, Republican Senator Jon Husted lost the seat once held by Vance.

The Haitian Times noted that the race matters to Haitian residents of Springfield, Ohio, who were targeted by false claims during the 2024 presidential campaign and face uncertainty over their immigration status. It said the new administration's approach to immigrant communities will be closely watched.
