Haitian-American physician Yvens G. Laborde is in Haiti on a medical and humanitarian mission focused on Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haïtien, Le National reported. Laborde is an associate professor at the Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine, a partnership between Xavier University of Louisiana and Ochsner Health.

He is working with Hôpital Universitaire Justinien in Cap-Haïtien, Hôpital de la Paix in Port-au-Prince, the Ministry of Public Health and Population, the FONDYLSAHH foundation, the National Medical Association's council on international affairs, Ochsner Health and the UQ Ochsner Clinical School. A container of medical supplies and equipment is being shipped to Haiti.

The priority is training and supporting health workers: interns, residents, nurses, doctors, technicians and support staff. The newspaper noted that insecurity in Port-au-Prince makes travel and access to health facilities difficult.

In August, Laborde told the National Medical Association's scientific assembly in Puerto Rico that protecting life means reducing vulnerabilities and respecting the dignity of people hit by crises. His college received preliminary accreditation in October and expects its first graduating class in 2027.
