Economist Etzer Emile has announced that he will run for president of Haiti, Juno7 reported on October 31. The university professor and entrepreneur, a native of Cavaillon in the South department, made the announcement in a video statement and is running under the banner of Gwoupman Solèy.
Emile is known for books and talks that explain economics to the public, especially on entrepreneurship, financial inclusion and national production. In his video he said Haiti's problem is one of governance, not resources, comparing the country to a vehicle whose driver is the issue.
His program calls for stronger security and justice institutions, better intelligence, tighter control of illegal weapons and the borders, while respecting the law and human rights. On the economy, he promises infrastructure and administrative and tax reforms to attract local and foreign investment in industry, agriculture, tourism, trade and renewable energy such as solar and wind.
He also pledges to fight corruption and impunity, make state spending public, end patronage hiring in the civil service and give more room to women, people in the regions, the diaspora and people with disabilities. The statement did not say how the proposals would be financed. Under the new electoral calendar, the first round is set for July 18, 2027.
