The director general of Haiti's National Ambulance Center (CAN), Ricardo Jean-Baptiste, has laid out his priorities for the 2026-2027 fiscal year at a meeting with senior staff, iciHaiti reported on Monday.

He announced that contract workers' status will be regularized, through renewed contracts and formal appointments for those who meet the requirements. He also mentioned employee benefits such as debit and fuel cards, and a special payment for staff in December, ahead of the holidays.

Jean-Baptiste again rejected claims that a CAN ambulance was slow to reach Kenscoff Mayor Massillon Jean when he fell ill. He said he had already answered them at a press conference on October 12: the ambulance took 45 minutes to reach the mayor, an ambulance was available in Kenscoff, and the emergency protocol was triggered as soon as the alert came in.

The mayor, who stayed in his town during gang attacks, died in October.
