An oil slick from a tanker attacked near the Strait of Hormuz has reached Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost emirate of the United Arab Emirates, and all beaches in the emirate have been closed, Africanews reported on October 28, citing news agencies.

Video showed oil at the Al Hamra Golf Club. Oil had already washed up in Umm Al Quwain, according to an Associated Press photo dated October 24. Authorities are working to contain the leak, and experts warn that desalination plants, which supply the country's water, could be at risk.

The report identifies the Panama-flagged tanker GEM NO.2, which British sources said was hit by a projectile off the UAE coast on October 9, causing a fire that was later brought under control. It did not give the size of the slick.

Tehran claims control of the strait and regularly targets ships that cross it without its permission, the report said.
