The Nippes department has been hit hardest by the rains that have soaked southern Haiti since October 24, with 1,767 homes flooded, 48 small houses destroyed and 1,920 families affected, according to an updated toll published by iciHaiti on Thursday, October 29.
The toll, compiled from reports by the civil protection offices of Grand'Anse, Nippes and the South and by the aid group Entraide Médicale Internationale, lists three deaths in Nippes and one in the Southeast. Two fishermen are still missing in Les Abricots, in Grand'Anse.
In Grand'Anse, 630 homes were flooded, along with the community hospital in Corail, a school and a public market. In the South, several hundred homes took on water, about 200 of them in Les Cayes, where sections of the embankments along the Ravine du Sud collapsed.
Farmers lost crops and livestock in a region already hurt by drought, and damaged dirt roads have cut off access to some towns. Families have taken shelter with relatives in Grand'Anse, in schools in the South and Nippes, and in a church in Barradères.
Departmental emergency operations centers have been partly activated, and officials are running public awareness campaigns. They stress that the figures are preliminary and will change as field assessments are completed; earlier reports from the South and Southeast gave different numbers.
