Heavy rain and thunderstorms have damaged roads in several departments, with the South, Grand'Anse and Northwest hit hardest, Public Works Minister Joseph Almathe Pierre Louis told a press conference with the health ministry, civil protection and the Hydrometeorological Unit (UHM), iciHaiti reported on Monday, October 26.
Citing the UHM, officials stressed that Haiti is not facing a hurricane but a period of intense rain and storms, which has still caused significant damage. Most regions reported no major emergency.
In the South, sections of riverbank collapsed at the Antoine Simon and Brefèt ravines near Les Cayes, damaging roads, Le Nouvelliste and iciHaiti reported. At Tiburon, the road is cut at Tapion, and crews cannot yet work there because water is still rushing down the ravines. In La Créole, floodwater carried large amounts of debris.
In Grand'Anse, a large landslide blocked National Road 7 at Katisch before Public Works crews cleared it, and work is planned at Chadonnet to remove earth and rocks blocking the road. In the Northwest, the Trois Rivières river washed away part of National Road 5 at Rozye and Degason.
In the West, runoff carried mud and debris into Tijo and Tabarre. The Ladigue and Caïman rivers at Petit-Goâve and Léogâne flowed normally thanks to preventive work, but near Delann a river changed course. In the Southeast, rivers rose without major damage so far. The minister urged residents to stay very alert near rivers that often overflow and on damaged roads.
