Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was re-elected president of Brazil on Sunday, October 25, winning an unprecedented fourth term at nearly 81 years old, Le Nouvelliste reported, citing a near-complete count.
The left-wing president took 51.76% of the vote against 48.24% for conservative senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who had finished ahead in the first round on October 4.
Brazil stays on the left while Argentina, Chile and Colombia have moved to the right with the backing of U.S. President Donald Trump, the paper noted. Lula said Brazilians had voted to “guarantee democracy.”
French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez congratulated him, and China said it was ready to keep working with Brazil. Bolsonaro contested the result.
