Community members, advocates and elected officials gathered in Flatbush, Brooklyn, on Thursday, October 22, to demand the release of Roberto Lamour, a Haitian father held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), The Haitian Times reported.

ICE agents took Lamour from his apartment at 75 Lenox Road on the morning of October 3. Residents allege the agents said they were New York police officers to get inside; the NYPD told amNewYork it was not involved. Friends say he has no criminal record.

He was first held at Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey, then moved to a detention center in Mississippi, more than 1,000 miles from his wife, Darchnee Lamour, their daughter, who is not yet 3, and his lawyer. His wife said the little girl cries for her father and runs to the door every time the bell rings.

Council Member Rita Joseph, whose office is in contact with the family, called him a husband, a father and “our neighbor,” and demanded his immediate release and return to New York. Public Advocate Jumaane Williams attended the rally, along with Hands Off NYC, the 75 Lenox Road Tenant Association, the New York Immigration Coalition and Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees.
