Haiti's Civil Protection and the Permanent Secretariat for Risk and Disaster Management (SPGRD) placed the West, Grand'Anse, Nippes, South and Southeast under orange alert on Sunday, October 25, HaitiLibre reported. The Northwest and the Artibonite were placed under yellow alert.
The authorities said low-pressure systems over the Caribbean Sea were still bringing rain and strong winds. The orange alert reflects a high risk of flooding, landslides, rockfalls and rough seas, and heavy rain had already fallen in several communes.
Civil Protection urged people living near ravines, rivers that flood or the coast to move to a temporary shelter or to a home in a safer area. People in areas prone to landslides or mudslides were told to go somewhere safe and to plan with relatives in case an evacuation becomes necessary.
Residents were also asked to tie down or bring in outdoor objects such as trash cans, tools and signs, to move boats and canoes away from the shore and moor them firmly, to follow official bulletins rather than rumors, and to look after elderly people, people with disabilities and children.
