The Hôpital Immaculée Conception in Les Cayes will offer free breast cancer screening from Monday, October 26, to Friday, October 30, as part of Pink October, Juno7 reported.
The campaign is coordinated by Dr. Pierre James, head of the hospital's surgery department, with young nurses, medical students, interns and resident doctors doing their social service. Because resources are limited, only the screening is free and any extra tests will not be covered. If a suspicious abnormality is found, the team will help with follow-up and refer patients to appropriate care.
The awareness campaign began in 2024. Dr. James said it has reached about ten towns and roughly fifty schools, universities and religious institutions, along with door-to-door visits. He cited lack of information, poverty, distance from health centers, fear of the diagnosis and misconceptions about the disease as obstacles.
Breast cancer can progress without visible signs, which is why early detection matters, he said, urging women not to be afraid to get screened.
