Haiti had 62 savings and credit cooperatives licensed by the central bank (BRH) in 2026, the bank said for International Credit Union Day, HaitiLibre reported on Thursday, October 22.
As of June 30, 2026, the sector held 40.13 billion gourdes in assets, 32.60 billion in deposits and 20.19 billion in net loans. It counted 1,520,094 members, including 50,185 borrowers. Of the 49,380 individual borrowers, 19,535, or 39.6%, were women.
In localities such as Dano, Belle-Anse and Marre-Rouge, credit unions are often the only financial institutions, the BRH said, a presence that matters even more when insecurity makes travel difficult. Members borrow to grow a business, pay tuition or health costs and buy farm supplies.
Each member has one vote at general meetings, where members elect leaders and review annual reports. A BRH circular dated October 9, 2024, sets governance rules for the sector.
