The Initiative Committee for constitutional revision met representatives of CORPUHA, the conference of rectors, presidents and heads of Haitian higher-education institutions, on Thursday, October 22, at the Ritz Kinam hotel, Juno7 reported.
The meetings are part of the National Pact for Stability and the Organization of Elections, signed on February 21, 2026, which provides for a revision of the amended 1987 Constitution. The committee had already met six political groups, Fanmi Lavalas, OPL, KONBA, En Avant, ASE and PHTK, as well as departmental chambers of commerce and business groups including ADIH and AmCham.
According to Juno7, the committee leans toward a targeted revision rather than an overhaul of the political system. Topics include making the Constitution easier to amend, aligning elected terms, how the prime minister is appointed, the length of the presidential term and a proposal for elected mayors to lead local governments.
No final text has been adopted. More meetings are planned with signatories of the pact, civil society and parties that did not sign it, before any text is put to the population.
