Jerry Tardieu, a former deputy for Pétion-Ville, author and entrepreneur, registered on Wednesday, October 21, as a presidential candidate on the Provisional Electoral Council's online platform, Le Nouvelliste and Juno7 reported. He is running under the banner of the political group En Avant pour Haïti.
Le Nouvelliste described him as the 17th man to register for the presidential race.
In a statement from his campaign office, Tardieu said that within five years he would end insecurity and revive the economy through mass job creation. He proposes strengthening the Haitian National Police and the Armed Forces of Haiti, creating a national guard of young people to help retake territory held by gangs, and cutting off the gangs' sources of money, along with training and jobs for youth.
On the economy, he wants easier access to credit for agriculture, infrastructure, tourism, new technologies, trade and culture, support for businesses of every size and more vocational training, so that each department offers more chances to produce, invest and work. He also called on the diaspora to take part in national life.
His statement did not say how the measures would be financed. Registering online does not mean a candidacy has been validated; candidates have until October 31 to register.
