Construction has begun on a new community health center in Coteaux, in Haiti's South department, one of three centers that together will serve about 240,000 people.
The United Nations Development Programme, the Ministry of Public Health and the government of Japan took part in the groundbreaking. The center is being built to withstand natural hazards and better protect patients and staff. The South was among the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and the 2021 earthquake.
In nearby Roche-à-Bateau, health officials and the UNDP visited a new incinerator for medical waste, one of three departmental incinerators funded by the Global Fund.
In Les Cayes, La Fabrique des Arts opened a workshop on cultural management on Monday, October 12, led by Gary Lubin and Pascale Jaunay. It trains people in running cultural projects from idea to execution, part of an effort to professionalize the arts in the Greater South.
The government is also studying plans for a modern football stadium at Parc Larco in Les Cayes.
