Digicel customers across Haiti lost internet service on Monday, October 12, the third outage in less than a month, and many are angry.
The company said two international fiber-optic links along National Road 1 were damaged. “We received reports of heavy gunfire in the area in question, and we believe this may have caused damage to our international fiber-optic cables,” it said. Its technical teams are looking for a safe way to reach the site.
Digicel reported earlier outages on September 23 and on October 4 and 5. The cuts affect calls and messages between Haiti and relatives abroad as well as service inside the country.
On Digicel's Facebook page, customers asked to be reimbursed for data plans they could not use. “It's not enough to later offer 1GB for a single day,” wrote Zenny Celestin. Others asked why the company does not have backup fiber routes away from the highway.
National Road 1 links Port-au-Prince with the North through Cabaret, Saint-Marc and Gonaïves. Gangs such as Taliban in Canaan and Gran Grif and Kokorat San Ras in the Artibonite control long stretches of it.
Digicel had not said when service would be fully restored.
