Jacmel's town hall has signed a partnership with the Jacmel School-Workshop to assess and restore the city's historic Iron Market and other heritage buildings.

Mayor Marceau Joseph and the school's director, Jean-Louis Wilson, reached the agreement on Friday, October 16. It covers the Iron Market as well as public spaces and historic houses that form part of the city's architectural heritage.

The school will carry out technical assessments that the town hall plans to use to seek funding from international donors. Money for the rehabilitation has not yet been secured.

The School-Workshop is funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation. The French Development Agency and UNESCO have supported other urban and craft projects in the city.

Jacmel, in the Southeast, is known for its 19th-century merchant houses with iron balconies, its Kanaval and its artisans. Its historic center was badly damaged in the 2010 earthquake.
