The Haitian National Police opened a new police station in Delmas 19 on Wednesday, October 14, to keep a permanent presence in the area and protect residents and businesses.

The post, named “Antenne 19,” was built in a relatively short time despite the police force's limited resources, the news site iciHaiti reported.

Senior officers attended the opening, among them Chief Commissioner Mackenzy Hector, deputy director for the West 1 department, and Chief Commissioner Nacius Junior Lacombe, who heads the Delmas jurisdiction. Municipal Inspector Wilner Dorlean was installed as the station's chief.

Delmas, a large commune in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, has suffered repeated gang attacks. Its mayor, Wilson Jeudy, is registered online as a presidential candidate and faced an October 15 deadline to resign his post if he intends to run.
