The government is studying whether to build a modern, FIFA-standard football stadium in Les Cayes so that Haiti's national teams can play home matches in their own country again.
Youth and Sports Minister Pythagore Dumas made a second inspection visit to Parc Larco in Les Cayes on Saturday, October 10. He said Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé is personally working to settle a land dispute that has kept the park from operating properly for more than a decade.
Ministry experts will soon study the project's feasibility. Officials say the plan may go beyond a renovation to a new stadium.
Haiti cannot host international matches at home because FIFA has barred the Stade Sylvio Cator in Port-au-Prince over security. The men's team played its September “home” match in Kingston, Jamaica, and is expected to host the United States there in November.
Berthin Bazelais, the ministry's director for the South, welcomed the idea, saying a stadium would be a major step for football in the region and the country. The ministry says it has committed to renovating six sports parks nationwide.
