The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an audit into Tesla's Cybercab on September 3, the day Tesla began charging fares for rides in Austin. The probe covers about 1,000 vehicles.

Regulators will examine the process and data Tesla used to self-certify the two-seat vehicle, which has no steering wheel or pedals, including whether the company correctly concluded that certain federal safety standards did not apply.
