Haitian filmmaker Gessica Généus won the Villa Medici Prize for Best Film at the sixth Villa Medici Film Festival in Rome for "Marie Madeleine," receiving the award on September 19.
The 104-minute film reimagines the biblical story of Mary Magdalene as a sex worker in Jacmel who falls in love with an evangelical believer. The jury praised its exploration of "what happens when belief becomes both a refuge and a prison."
