New Zealand's medicines regulator, Medsafe, approved two psychiatrists to prescribe pharmaceutical-grade MDMA as part of a treatment program for adults with PTSD that has not responded to other therapies.

Treatment takes place in a supervised clinical setting alongside psychotherapy. Officials stress that MDMA has not been approved as a general medicine and that evidence is still emerging.
