Haitian singer-songwriter BéLo played a sold-out show at Joe's Pub in New York City on Wednesday, October 14, performing songs from more than 20 years of his career.
The audience sang along through much of the evening, turning familiar songs into a call-and-response, as BéLo sang about gratitude and resilience and acknowledged the hard times facing the Haitian community.
BéLo's sound grew out of twoubadou music and blends reggae, jazz, soul and traditional Haitian rhythms. He sings mostly in Kreyòl and won the Prix Découvertes RFI in 2006. His songs often deal with social issues and with his attachment to Haiti.
The concert, sponsored by the Haitian-owned Flatbush restaurant Rogers Burgers, marked his return to New York.
