A petroleum storage tank was damaged on the morning of Tuesday, October 6, at the WINECO site at the Varreux terminal, the main fuel terminal in the Port-au-Prince area, the company said in a statement.

No one was injured, no fuel was lost and stocks are intact, WINECO said. The company did not give the cause. The news site iciHaiti reported that gunfire, intentional or stray, was the likely cause.

WINECO said its teams were preparing to resume deliveries on Wednesday, October 7. “Supplying the population is our responsibility. The safety of our personnel remains our absolute priority,” the statement said.

The Varreux terminal sits near Cité Soleil, an area where the Gang Suppression Force carried out an operation the same day. Armed groups have blocked or attacked the terminal several times in recent years, causing fuel shortages across the country.
