Haiti beat the Dominican Republic 4-1 on Thursday, October 1, in front of a sold-out crowd of more than 23,000 at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo, making it three wins from three in the Concacaf Nations League.
Don Deedson Louicius put the Grenadiers ahead in the ninth minute. Wilson Isidor doubled the lead in the 51st minute. Dorny Romero pulled one back for the hosts four minutes later, but Isidor struck again in the 67th minute and Yassin Fortuné headed in the fourth in the 77th.
“We had our hearts set on winning this game, for all Haitians in the world,” Isidor said.
Haiti now has nine points from three matches, level with Curaçao at the top of Group A, while the Dominican Republic has six. Only the top two teams advance to the quarterfinals. Coach David Badía has won all three of his matches in charge, with nine goals scored and three conceded.
The win carried extra weight. The two nations share the island of Hispaniola and a relationship marked by migration disputes and deep historical wounds, and the match came days before the anniversary of the 1937 Parsley Massacre.
Haiti closes group play against Costa Rica on Sunday, October 4, at 8 p.m. ET in San José.
