Haiti's women's national team lost 5-1 to Japan on Friday, October 9, in a friendly at the Stade Bauer in Saint-Ouen, near Paris, in front of more than 2,000 spectators.
Haiti had a chance to score first in the 22nd minute but could not finish. Japan, ranked fifth in the world, then scored three times in 12 minutes: Kiko Seike in the 26th minute, Maika Hamano in the 33rd and Yui Hasegawa in the 38th.
Batcheba Louis pulled one back for the Grenadières in first-half stoppage time, from a pass by Nérilia Mondésir. Remina Chiba made it 4-1 in the 57th minute and Maya Hijikata scored the fifth in the 81st.
Le Nouvelliste wrote that Haiti was outclassed by Japan's level of play and still has much to learn against the top teams.
Coach Pia Sundhage's team has a second test on Tuesday, October 13, against Australia at the Stade Walter-Luzi in Chambly. The match that counts comes on November 28, when Haiti meets Mexico in a continental quarterfinal in the United States. A win would send the Grenadières directly to the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil.
