Haiti is through to the quarterfinals of the 2026-27 Concacaf Nations League despite losing 2-0 to Costa Rica on Sunday, October 4, at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Aymá in San José.
The Grenadiers finished second in Group A of League A with nine points from four matches. Curaçao won the group with 10. The Dominican Republic beat Nicaragua later on Sunday to reach nine points as well, but Haiti's goal difference of plus four kept it in second place.
Costa Rica, which was fighting to avoid relegation to League B, struck early. Carlos Mora headed in a corner in the sixth minute and Andrey Soto added a second with his left foot in the 21st. Haiti made four changes from the team that beat the Dominican Republic 4-1 on October 1 and finished with six shots, none of them on target.
The defeat ended a three-match winning run under new coach David Badía, and Haiti's six-match unbeaten streak against Costa Rica going back to 2019. Haiti scored nine goals and conceded five in the group stage.
“This is how Haiti always does it: we will get back up again after this defeat,” the Haitian Football Federation wrote on Facebook after the match.
In November, Haiti is due to play the United States over two legs, the Haitian Times reported. The four quarterfinal winners qualify directly for the 2027 Gold Cup and go on to the Nations League finals at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The four losers go into the Gold Cup preliminary round.
