Haiti's women's national team, the Grenadières, will play two friendlies in France this month against two of the world's best teams, and the Haitian embassy is asking the community to fill the stands.
Haiti, ranked 47th in the world, faces Japan, ranked fifth, on Friday, October 9, at 8 p.m. at the Stade Bauer in Saint-Ouen, just north of Paris. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and tickets are sold through Red Star FC's online ticket office. On Tuesday, October 13, at 9 p.m., Haiti plays Australia, ranked 15th, at the Stade Walter-Luzi in Chambly.
The matches prepare the team for its continental quarterfinal against Mexico on November 28 in the United States. A win there would send Haiti directly to the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.
Coach Pia Sundhage has called up 24 players. Danique Ypema, of Hera United in the Netherlands, and Audrey François, of Vancouver Rise FC in Canada, receive their first call-ups. Maudeline Moryl and Chelsea Surpris return.
The squad shows how far Haitian women's football reaches. It includes Melchie Dumornay of Lyon, Nérilia Mondésir of Seattle Reign, Brittany Raphino of Inter Milan, Chelsea Domond of Panathinaikos and Laurie-Ann Moïse of Kayseri in Turkey, along with players at clubs across France, Canada, the United States and Germany.
Haiti won both of its June friendlies, 2-1 against New Zealand and 3-1 against Equatorial Guinea, with two goals from Dumornay in the second match.
