At least 11 civilians were killed on Monday, September 28, in Gros-Morne, in Haiti's Artibonite department, in what officials described as gang retaliation for an operation by the international Gang Suppression Force.

Interim Mayor Hubert Cénéac said three suspected members of the Kokorat San Ras gang were also killed in Dosni, a locality in Gros-Morne's third communal section, bringing the death toll to at least 14.

The violence followed an operation by the force's Sri Lankan contingent against Kokorat San Ras members who had set up illegal toll points in the area. Three suspected gang members were killed in that operation before the troops withdrew.

Four members of one family, including a grandmother, her son-in-law and her grandson, were among the dead. They were traveling by motorcycle to take a sick woman to the hospital when they were caught in the crossfire. Several houses were set on fire.

The attack echoes the deadly raids on Kenscoff in August, where at least 47 people were killed. The UN Security Council renewed the Gang Suppression Force the next day, with speakers urging a faster deployment to protect communities outside the capital.
