Seventeen-year-old Shin Ohashi of Japan broke the men's 200-meter breaststroke world record on Thursday, September 24, at the Asian Games in Nagoya, winning gold in 2 minutes 4.83 seconds.

He is the first man ever to swim the event in under 2:05. In front of a home crowd, the teenager took more than a second off the previous world record held by China's Qin Haiyang, and went even further under Léon Marchand's Olympic record from Paris 2024.

Ohashi already held the world junior record. He is the first Japanese swimmer to break the 200 breaststroke world record at an Asian Games since Olympic great Kosuke Kitajima in 2002.

The swim instantly made him one of the biggest names in the sport less than two years before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
