On September 8, OpenAI claimed its AI had solved a version of the Navier-Stokes problem, one of mathematics' most famous open questions, about the equations that describe how fluids flow.

Mathematicians told NPR that humanity has learned little from the solution so far. Mathematician Tristan Buckmaster said he believes OpenAI was tipped off to an approach he was pursuing, which OpenAI denies.
