Built between 1805 and 1820 under Henri Christophe, the Citadelle Laferrière crowns Bonnet à l'Évêque mountain above the town of Milot in northern Haiti. It was designed to protect the young nation from any French attempt to restore slavery.

With the Sans-Souci Palace and the Ramiers site, it forms the National History Park, listed by UNESCO in 1982.

Visitors reach it from Cap-Haïtien by road to Milot, then on foot or horseback up the mountain. Check current travel advisories before planning a trip.
